regarding process to get a panamanian passport for canal zone births:the consulate in washington told me to send my birth certificate for "authentication". and then i would need to take that to panama to get cedula and passport. MY QUESTION:: my birth certificate is the original one issued by the "registrar of vital statistics, balboa heights, canal zone--certified true copy" plus a signature. year 1949. on one website i read that beginning on dec. 1, 1999, canal zone vital records formally issued by the panama canal commission are being issued by the dept of state in washington d.c. SO...can my original certificate be "authenticated" by the consulate or does it need to be a copy issued by the dept of state?? which will cost me $30. i'm posting my question here because i have e-mailed them twice. once they were not clear in their answer and once they did not reply. thanks for any help!!

They will need to "authenticate" the original of course. Your best bet is to take the document in to consulate in person and get it authenticated.
